LABELS
This is a brief breakdown of some of the labels that we stock here at Little Universe. This will give you a little oversight as to what style of music content you will find within the particular labels repertoire although we may not stock or carry all titles.The other section on music will give you a better idea on the specific music styles. I hope this is usefull and will also give you an idea how big this "ambient monster" extends. This is by no means a comprehensive list of all the labels out there, but thought it might provide a starting point to anyone new to this style of music and the label origins.
AD21 MUSIC is a Spanish based record label from Bruno Sanfilippo & Max Corbacho featuring ambient and contemporary electronic music
since 1998. Max's style is similar and akin to the Steve Roach school of thought ambient while Bruno is more contemporay in format with use of electronics and natural instrument sounds.
COLD MEAT INDUSTRY is a Swedish label established in 1987, and has remained as one of the leading and most influential labels of the alternative genre. The conceptual idea behind the label still remains the same; to release enjoyable music with a deeper reflection on life and death, within the musical spectrum of dystopia varying from dark to darker, from ambient industrial to acoustic folk, from beautiful to that which is just painful, exploring both the philosophical and the subversive activities of human kind and its psyche.
CYCLIC LAW is a Canadian based Record Label promoting international acts working in the fields of Ambient / Experimental / Electroacoustic and Industrial soundscapes. CD's are high quality and uniquely packaged from various international Ambient and Experimental artists.
DEEP LISTENINGS in Italy, this is Oophoi's label comprising the Umbra & Penumbra titles. Founded in 1992 Oophoi continues to
expand his unique style of Deep Space Ambient & Drone music in his own studio,The Kiva. Many collaborations feature here with Tau Ceti, Netherworld & Klaus Wiese. All titles feature superb artwork cover design and many are limited release to CDr.
DEEP SKIES is a sub department of Eventide Music from Kevin Kendle. Inspired by the mystery of deep space, the DEEP SKIES series of albums feature Kevin Kendle's most spacious, ethereal sounds, perfectly evoking the vast majesty and awesome beauty of space.
DiN is the UK label of Ian Boddy. Ian's main aim was to provide a label which could provide a bridge between the analogue sound of the early 70's synth pioneers and the digital soundscapes of the more experimental modern exponents of electronic music. Thus DiN provides a platform for music that stretches across the range of contemporary Electronica. Each DiN release describes a musical landscape where nothing is forbidden and boundaries are redundant. DiN has adopted a strictly limited edition ethos. In this way, DiN is able to appeal to the collector and the connoisseur by releasing limited edition multiples. DiN does not repress back catalogue. There have been a wide range of artists involved with DiN so far including Chris Carter, Robert Rich, Tetsu Inoue, Markus Reuter, ARC, Centrozoon, Dub Atomica, Surface 10, Protogonos, Subsonic Experience, dbkaos, Parallel Worlds, Klaus Hoffmann- Hoock, Bernhard Wostheinrich and of course IanBoddy. With such an eclectic mix of musicians it's fair to say there's been quite a range of musical styles emerging on DiN. However under the guidance of Boddy the output on DiN has a consistency and high standard that will challenge and interest all lovers of "fine contemporary Electronica".
FARIA RECORDS is based in Russia. This is soley run by Andrey Faryus. Superbly packaged CD's with quality artwork in a variety of
music styles from Berlin Style to Dark Ambient that are also Limited release. Artists featured are Exalot, Thomas Weiss, Vishudha Kali, Antonio Testa, Oophoi, Faryus, Alio Die,Troum, Mathias Grassow, Vadim Bondarenko, Aglaia, Calabi-Yau, Bad Sector & Robert Rich. Andrey has a superb policy on not releasing MP3's due to the quality approach which essentially wipes out most of the nuances& hidden sounds from the original source.
GLACIAL MOVEMENTS RECORDS is a label born to describe glacial and isolationalist soundscapes. Run by Alessandro Tedeschi (Netherworld). The 1st release was in 2006 with a compilation Limited CD Cryosphere. Netherworld has also released numerous albums in collaboration with Oophoi.
HEARTS OF SPACE Hearts of Space Records was launched in 1984 following the success of the radio program first launched in 1973. From the inception of the record company the focus was on building a quality independent label with a carefully selected roster of artists such as Constance Demby,Robert Rich & Micheal Stearns. We carry most of the "Spacy" recordings here from just mentioned but the label features a large selection of titles of New Age material too. I hate that term!!.In 2001 the record label part of the company was sold to Valley Entertainment in New York, who maintain the catalog of almost 150 titles and release selected new recordings. Producer Stephen Hill continues to work on A&R and production of new releases, while maintaining work on the radio program.
HYPNOS Founded in 1996 in the US, Hypnos was first conceived to release solo and collaborative recordings by label founder Mike Griffin.Before Hypnos even started, though, the idea was transformed into a functioning record label, designed to release a variety of work by like-minded musicians and sound artists everywhere.The first CD was supposed to be Griffin's SUDDEN DARK, but that was pushed back and WASHED IN MERCURY by Saul Stokes was released first, early in 1997. Artists include M. INTENT CITY is a US based company releasing music from Lounge,World Beat & Chillout styles of electronica. There is a great collection of music here which is easy to groove into! Fans of Enigma or Deep Forest will find something of interest in here I'm sure. Artists featured here are Lesiem, Xcultures, Lorna Lee, Magna Canta, Mysteria, Waterbone, Govinda.
JUST MUSIC is an independent music label based in London,UK, in partnership with their artists, offering the very best in cutting-edge electronica, acoustic, ambient, down-tempo, laid back beats and chill. Their ethos is making great music with integrity. They are passionate about the authenticity, originality and exceptional quality of the music that is released on the label. Artists featured here are Jon Hopkins, Honeyroot, Weatherman, Future Loop Foundation, Digitonal, Echaskech & Laroca.
LOTUSPIKE & SPOTTED PECCARY Based in the US, now have joined forces with Spotted Peccary to create an even more powerful conduit for the progressive ambient and electronic music Lotuspike has earned a reputation for.
With bases in San Diego, CA and Portland, OR, Spotted Peccary Music is one of the most respected independent record labels of the instrumental, ambient, electronic, progressive, space, and new age music genres. The label specialize in a distinctive sound that weaves electronic and acoustic textures with hints of classical music structures and state-of-the-art recording techniques.
NEW EARTH RECORDS Founded in 1990 in Munich, Germany, New Earth Records quickly became one of Europe's best selling New Age and World music labels and is now a world-renowned New Age powerhouse. The New Earth headquarters, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is situated in a warm, inviting environment that inspires the staff and fuels the music process... Over the past eighteen years New Earth Records has cultivated a spirit of New Age that many find beneficial for healing, meditation and spiritual growth. We carry a select few titles from this label from Deuter and Al Gromer Khan.
NEW WORLD MUSIC was founded in 1982 by Colin Willcox (a trained Naturopath, Osteopath and Psychologist) to provide others with the very best in Relaxation Music. Dealing with a number of new age artists you'll find in those "candle burning, incense smelling,witches flying, [Sorry Shirley :-)]" type stores abound. Jonn Serrie's music on this label is simply some of the best Space & Planetarium music you could start with. The music was one of the inspirations to me setting up "Little Universe" in the first place and to date is one of my favourite artists out there.
REVERSE ALIGNMENT Another Swedish label dealing with Dark Ambient, Industrial, Noise & Experimental music. All titles are limited.
